Soils That Simply Support
The secret to strong, long-lasting gardens is simple: healthy, well-prepared soil. But not all soils are equal. Some hold too much water, some dry out too fast, and others are lacking in essential organic matter. The right blend that's tailored to the plants you’re growing and the conditions you’re working with can make all the difference in how your garden performs and how much upkeep it needs.
- Garden soil: A rich mix full of organic matter to support flowering plants, veggies, shrubs, and natives
- Topsoil: A versatile blend of clays, silts, sands and organics used for levelling yards, topping up beds, or lawn prep
- Turf underlay soil: Engineered for excellent drainage and root penetration, perfect for laying new grass or restoring lawn areas
These materials improve soil structure, help retain moisture, reduce erosion, and support long-term plant health. Whether you’re starting from scratch or refreshing an established space, the right soil mix can help you achieve better and faster growth.

How often should I replace or replenish garden soil?
Garden soil doesn’t need to be completely replaced often, but it does benefit from regular replenishment. Over time, nutrients are depleted, organic matter breaks down and the soil structure can become compacted or imbalanced.
Here’s how often to maintain garden soil:
- Annually: Add compost or organic matter before the growing season to refresh nutrients and improve texture.
- Every 2–3 years: Consider a deeper top-up of garden soil in raised beds or heavily planted areas.
- As needed: If you notice poor drainage, stunted plant growth or depleted texture, it may be time to replace a portion of the soil.
For container gardens, it's recommended to replace at least one-third of the soil each year and top up with fresh potting mix.
What are the signs of poor soil quality?
Poor soil quality can often be identified through visual cues and plant performance. Common signs include:
- Water pooling on the surface or extremely dry soil that won’t absorb moisture
- Hard, compacted texture that’s difficult to dig or crumble
- Yellowing leaves or stunted plant growth, even with regular watering and feeding
- Increased weed growth but poor success with desired plants
- Foul odour, indicating poor aeration and possible anaerobic decomposition
- Lack of earthworms or insects, suggesting low biological activity
Improving soil quality typically involves adding organic matter, improving drainage or aeration, correcting pH levels and maintaining healthy microbial life. Healthy soil should be loose, well-draining, smell earthy and support diverse plant life.
What is the difference between topsoil and garden soil?
Topsoil is a general-purpose soil layer that typically contains a mix of sand, clay, and silt. It’s often used for filling, levelling, or creating a base layer before planting. While it offers decent drainage and structure, it may lack the organic nutrients plants need to thrive unless it’s been blended with compost.
Garden soil, on the other hand, is enriched with organic matter such as compost or manure, making it more fertile and better suited for planting flowers, vegetables, and shrubs. It holds nutrients more effectively and promotes healthy root growth. For most gardening projects, garden soil offers better results, especially when long-term plant health is the goal.
