What is the difference between washed sand and unwashed sand?
Washed sand has been cleaned to remove clay, silt, dust, and other impurities. This makes it more consistent in texture and ideal for applications like concrete production, mortar mixing, tiling, or children's sandpits. Unwashed sand, on the other hand, may contain small particles of debris or organic matter, making it less suitable for precision work but still usable for backfilling or certain landscaping tasks. Washed sand also drains better, making it the preferred choice for projects requiring moisture control or clean finishes.
Can I use beach sand for construction or gardening?
Natural beach sand is generally not recommended for construction or gardening unless it's specifically processed and cleaned. Raw beach sand can contain high levels of salt, which may damage concrete over time and negatively affect plant health in gardens. In landscaping, processed alternatives like washed river sand or bricklayers' sand are preferred because they're clean, free of salt, and designed for structural stability or plant compatibility. Always check if beach sand has been treated before using it in structural or plant-related projects.
What type of sand should I use for paving?
For paving projects, river sand or bedding sand is commonly recommended. These sands are coarse, well-graded, and allow for proper compaction—making them ideal for creating a stable base beneath pavers. Fine sand, such as bricklayers' sand, can cause movement or sinking over time due to poor drainage and compaction. In some cases, a layer of crushed rock or road base may be used underneath the sand for added support. Always level and compact the sand bed before laying your pavers, and consider using jointing sand on top to lock everything in place.
