Protect, Nourish & Style Your Garden
There’s more to mulch than meets the eye. Sure, it boosts curb appeal, but it’s also one of the easiest ways to improve your soil health and protect your plants year-round. On the Central Coast, where hot summers and unpredictable rain can be tough on gardens, a good layer of mulch helps regulate soil temperature, reduce water evaporation, and prevent erosion after storms. Plus, it keeps your beds weed-free with minimal effort.
There’s a mulch option for every style and need:
- Aussie colour mulch (40mm): Rich, red-toned mulch perfect for visual impact in garden beds and planters
- Pine bark (15mm, 40mm,): Long-lasting mulch ideal for garden beds, pots, and pathways
- Hardwood chip (15mm, 40mm): Durable and low-maintenance, suited for both function and appearance
- Leaf mulch: Organic mix of tree trimmings—great for improving soil structure and plant health
For the best results, mulch should be applied at around 75mm thickness and topped up as needed. Unsure which mulch will work best for your space? Our team can help you choose a product that matches both your garden’s needs and your style.
Need a hand getting it sorted? Call (02) 4324 1744 and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does mulch attract termites or pests?
Mulch can attract insects, including termites, but the risk depends on the type and how it’s used. Coarse, dry mulches like bark or hardwood chips are less likely to cause problems than soft, moist ones applied too close to buildings. To reduce the risk, avoid piling mulch directly against your home’s foundation or timber structures. Keeping a gap of at least 30cm (12 inches) from buildings and regularly turning or refreshing mulch can help deter pests. Many mulch types also deter weeds and act as a natural barrier to soil-borne diseases.
How often should mulch be replaced?
The frequency of mulch replacement depends on the type of mulch and local weather conditions. Organic mulches like leaf litter or bark gradually decompose and should be topped up every 6 to 12 months. You don’t always need to remove the old layer, as you can just rake it to break up any crust and add fresh mulch on top. In high-traffic areas or exposed locations, mulch may degrade or shift more quickly. Keeping an eye on thickness and condition will help you know when it’s time for a refresh.
What type of mulch is best for gardens?
The best mulch for a garden depends on your specific goals. Organic mulches, such as bark, leaf litter, or composted wood, are ideal for improving soil health because they break down over time and add nutrients. Pine bark is long-lasting and works well in ornamental beds, while leaf mulch breaks down faster and is better for veggie gardens and areas that need regular enrichment. If weed suppression is a priority, hardwood chips offer great coverage and durability. Consider both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits when choosing your mulch.
